The Dark Side of Healing
They never tell you healing can tear your world apart, that finding who you really are might break your aching heart. You’ll lose what once felt normal, outgrow what once felt right, and meet the parts you buried just to make it through the night.
You’ll grieve the years you wasted, the love you begged to keep, the promises you swallowed, the pain you buried deep. You’ll learn that setting boundaries can leave you standing alone, and sometimes finding yourself means losing what you’ve known.
That’s the darker side of healing, the truth beneath the pain. Before you bloom into yourself, you may have to brave the rain. But what falls away was never worth the loss of who you are.
Sometimes healing starts in darkness, so you can finally see the stars.
Behind the Poem
I wrote The Dark Side of Healing because I think we talk a lot about how beautiful healing is, but not nearly enough about how painful it can be.
Healing has given me so much, but it has also asked a lot of me. The more I have grown, the more I have had to look honestly at my life, my relationships, my patterns, and even the ways I learned to abandon myself just to keep the peace or hold onto people. There are things I can see now that I couldn’t see before, and once you see them, you can’t exactly go back to pretending you don’t.
There is grief in that. There is grief in realizing how long you accepted certain things because they felt normal. There is grief in outgrowing people you still love. There is grief in setting boundaries and discovering that some relationships don’t survive them. There is even grief in saying goodbye to old versions of yourself, because even if they weren’t happy, they knew how to survive the life you were living.
I think that’s the part of healing I wanted this poem to hold space for. Sometimes healing doesn’t feel like blooming. Sometimes it feels like everything is falling apart because the things that once held your life together no longer fit who you’re becoming.
That doesn’t mean you’re going backward.
Sometimes the dark side of healing is simply learning that becoming yourself may require grieving everything you had to be before.
