ᚱ Runes: The Language of Stone & Spirit

A Soulful Guide to the Mystical Power, Origins, and Use of Runes for Modern Seekers
by Hellbloom Haven

Runes are not just letters. They are living symbols, each one a spell, a story, a soulprint.
To draw a rune is to open a conversation with the deep and the divine.

Runes are one of the oldest tools of divination known to humanity, small, simple symbols with immense wisdom. They’re carved on wood, bone, or stone, but also etched into the soul of the Earth. Each rune holds an archetypal energy, a feeling, a frequency.

They’ve survived wars, time, and forgotten languages. Why? Because they still speak.

This guide is your invitation to listen.

STONE, WOOD, BONE, & MEMORY

Each one a portal.
Each one a frequency.
Each one a whisper from the past to help shape the future.

Runes aren’t just tools for divination. They are spiritual archetypes that reveal patterns, provoke reflection, and awaken parts of you that have been sleeping.

🔮 Where They Come From

Runes trace back to the Elder Futhark, a 24-symbol alphabet used by early Germanic peoples as far back as 150 CE.

But in myth, the runes are older than time.

According to Norse legend, Odin, the All-Father, hung himself from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, for nine nights, pierced by his own spear, without food or water, seeking wisdom. On the ninth night, the runes revealed themselves to him.

They were not created but discovered, already woven into the fabric of reality.

The word rune means “secret” or “whisper.” These symbols were used for:

  • Casting lots and receiving insight
  • Marking sacred items
  • Inviting divine support and protection

Their energy still speaks, across ages and timelines.

🧠 How Runes Work (Science + Spirit)

Runes don’t “tell the future.”
They help you tune into the now, to see with symbolic sight, to name the energy moving through you, and to call forward your own clarity.

🧬 The Psychology of Symbols:

From a scientific perspective, runes are archetypes.
Your brain recognizes them like ancient road signs, each one carrying emotion, memory, meaning.
This taps your subconscious mind and lets your intuition rise without overthinking.

🔮 The Spirit of the Runes:

Each rune is more than a symbol, it’s a frequency being:

  • Fehu is wealth and beginnings
  • Ansuz is divine messages
  • Eihwaz is death, rebirth, initiation
  • Sowilo is the sun, victory, and guidance

When you draw a rune, you’re not just reading a symbol, you’re inviting that energy into your field.

They don’t just speak. They shift you.

🪨 What Runes Are Made Of

Traditionally, runes were carved into:

  • Wood – Birch, ash, elder (earthy, connected to nature)
  • Stone – River rocks, crystals, or pebbles (grounding, stabilizing)
  • Bone or Antler – Honoring life cycles and ancestral wisdom
  • Clay or Ceramic – Molded by hand, infused with intention

Modern sets may be:

  • Drawn on cards
  • Printed on paper or cloth
  • Stored digitally

You can even make your own.
What matters is not how expensive or elaborate they are, but how you relate to them.

🧙‍♀️ How to Use Runes

There’s no single “right” way to work with runes. But here’s how I personally work with them—gently, intuitively, and for healing.

✴️ Single Rune Draw

  • Ask a question or open to insight
  • Pull one rune
  • Reflect: What is this showing me right now?

✴️ Three-Rune Spread

  • Rune 1: Root / What’s behind you
  • Rune 2: Challenge / What’s present
  • Rune 3: Support / What’s opening next

✴️ Energy Check-In

  • Ask: What energy am I holding today?
  • What would support my growth right now?
  • What am I being invited to release or reclaim?

✴️ Reflection & Journaling

You can meditate with a rune, draw it, trace it, or write about its meaning.
Ask:

  • What does this shape feel like in my body?
  • What message does it hold for my healing?

Runes become a mirror for the inner work you’re ready to do.

✍️ Try This: A Gentle Rune Ritual

  1. Cleanse your rune set with smoke, sound, breath, or moonlight.
  2. Hold your set, and set an intention: “I invite truth, clarity, and loving awareness into this space.”
  3. Pull one rune from the set. Let it rest in your palm. Breathe with it.
  4. Reflect before you look up the traditional meaning. What do you feel?
  5. Journal or draw about it. Place it on your altar or carry it for the day.

No pressure. No performance. Just presence.

🌿 Going Deeper with the Runes

Gentle Practice for Healing & Inner Knowing

“Runes don’t tell the future. They awaken what’s already within.”
Hellbloom Haven

There are many ways to use runes.

Some people use them for divination.
Some for magical systems or ceremonies.

Here at Hellbloom Haven, I use them simply:
To support healing, deepen awareness, and hold space for transformation.

They help me:

  • Notice emotional patterns
  • Tap into guidance
  • Receive insight during journaling
  • Feel supported in life transitions

You don’t need to know all the meanings.
You don’t need to believe in anything mystical.
You just need to be open to what arises in the stillness.

🌌 Final Whisper

Each rune is a doorway, a torch, a mirror. When you draw one, you don’t just ask for answers,
you meet yourself more clearly than before.
